Research Definitions

The vocabulary behind our studies, explained without turning research measures into promises.

Recommendation coverage

The share of the responses counted in a study that recommend a particular provider. Read the published count and denominator together. This is a research coverage measure, not a customer rating or a probability of suitability.

Position and average position

Position describes where a provider appears in an ordered recommendation list. Average position summarizes the recorded positions across the applicable responses. It should be interpreted with the number of appearances and the study's rules for missing or unordered answers.

Usable response, mention, and recommendation

A usable response is an answer included in the research comparison. A mention simply names a provider; a recommendation presents it as an option for the question being asked. Those concepts should not be treated as interchangeable.

Unavailable means an answer or data point is absent. It is different from an explicit negative assessment and should not silently be represented as one.

Consensus index and fit review

A consensus index compares the providers appearing in a defined study. A fit review focuses on an individual provider and explains its research context, potential relevance, and limitations. Neither format supplies a personalized recommendation.

Reviewed describes a recorded human review. Verified describes a supported check of specified facts. These labels have different purposes and should only appear when their supporting records exist.
