The research in brief

ClickUp is the consensus leader for free project management for startups, named by 5 of 6 platforms (83.3% share) at an average listed position of 1.6 and a best position of 1. Trello is the strongest alternative for teams that want the fastest possible visual setup, and Jira is the leading pick for software and product teams that need Scrum or Kanban structure. This index studied 6 AI platforms - OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Grok, Kimi, and Google - using one standardized prompt sent once to each. Of 21 unique entities named, 10 qualified by being named by at least two platforms. The principal limitation is that platform answers are market intelligence, not independent customer reviews: they vary by date, wording, model, and retrieved sources, and several platforms reported research dates earlier than the study date.

1. ClickUp

Questions explored

  • Is ClickUp worth it for free project management for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free project management tool should a startup choose if it needs unlimited free members but only has 60 MB of file storage?

Verdict. ClickUp Free Forever is the consensus leader for this use case and the only top-ranked option that combines unlimited tasks with unlimited free-plan members. Five of six platforms named it, and four of those five placed it first [13]. The tradeoff is storage: the official pricing page lists 60 MB of total shared storage on Free, which most file-attaching teams exhaust quickly [13].

Why it ranked here. ClickUp received 5 platform mentions at an average listed position of 1.6 and a best position of 1. OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, and Google all ranked it first; DeepSeek ranked it fourth and rated the fit "mixed" [13]. The ranking reflects breadth of free features rather than depth in any single one.

Best suited for. Solo founders and small teams organizing product, marketing, sales, or operational tasks; startups that need unlimited tasks and basic list, board, and calendar workflows at no subscription cost; teams that want a defined upgrade path for storage, integrations, permissions, and expanded workspace limits.

Main strengths for this use case. No subscription cost and no credit card required [11]. Unlimited tasks and unlimited free-plan members, which neither Asana nor Monday.com matches on their current free tiers [190]. Kanban boards, List views, Calendar view, collaborative Docs, sprint management, and 24/7 support on the free plan [11]. A clear paid upgrade path to Unlimited at $7 per user per month billed annually or $10 billed monthly [13].

Main limitations. 60 MB of total shared storage is the single biggest practical constraint; Anthropic's evidence notes most teams exhaust it within weeks [282]. Free Forever is limited to 5 Spaces, 40 Lists per Space, and 100 Folders per Space [13]. Automation is capped at 5 active automations and 100 automation actions per month [33]. Free guests receive full permissions only, with no granular view, comment, or edit restrictions [36]. ClickUp's own comparison acknowledges that its configuration depth can create a steeper initial learning curve than simpler alternatives [35].

Pricing or cost summary. Free Forever: $0 per user per month. Unlimited: $7 per user per month billed annually, $10 billed monthly. Business: $12 per user per month billed annually, $19 billed monthly.

2. Trello

Questions explored

  • Is Trello or ClickUp better for a startup that needs a free Kanban board with the fastest possible setup?
  • What happens to a Trello free Workspace when the team adds an 11th collaborator?

Verdict. Trello Free is the strongest option for teams that prioritize speed of adoption over feature depth. Five of six platforms named it, and four placed it second [82]. Its hard ceilings - 10 collaborators and 10 open boards per Workspace - are architectural, not soft limits, and they trigger a paid upgrade for all members at once [75].

Why it ranked here. Trello received 5 platform mentions at an average listed position of 2.2 and a best position of 2. OpenAI and Anthropic both rated the fit "strong"; Kimi rated it "mixed" [82].

Best suited for. Solo founders and teams of up to 10 collaborators; Kanban-style task tracking, launch checklists, lightweight sprints, and content or sales workflows; teams prioritizing fast setup, unlimited cards, and visual organization over advanced reporting or permissions.

Main strengths for this use case. Zero subscription price with unlimited cards, unlimited activity history, and mobile apps [82]. Unlimited Power-Ups per board, enabling Slack, Google Drive, and other integrations on the free tier [301]. No credit card required, and the plan is permanent rather than a disguised trial [80]. A clear upgrade path: Standard at $5 per user per month billed annually or $6 billed monthly [82].

Main limitations. Free Workspaces are limited to 10 collaborators; exceeding that makes boards view-only and stops automations until the count is reduced or the Workspace is upgraded [75]. Free Workspaces are limited to 10 open boards [73]. Attachments are capped at 10 MB per file, though total storage is unlimited [82]. Automation is pooled at 250 runs and 2,500 operations per month across the Workspace [70]. Advanced views - Timeline, Calendar, Table, Dashboard, and Map - require Premium [156]. Task dependencies and workload views do not exist at any price tier [154].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0 for up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards. Standard: $5 per user per month billed annually, $6 billed monthly. Premium: $10 per user per month billed annually, $12.50 billed monthly. Enterprise: $17.50 per user per month billed annually. Atlassian Guard for SAML SSO is a separate subscription starting at $4 per user per month [84].

3. Jira

Questions explored

  • Is Jira worth it for a non-technical startup founder who needs free project management, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free project management tool should a software startup choose if it needs Scrum boards, a backlog, and unlimited projects under 10 users?

Verdict. Jira Cloud Free is the leading free option for software and product teams that need real agile structure. Four of six platforms named it, with Google placing it second [100]. It is a weaker fit for non-technical founders: multiple platforms describe a steeper learning curve and a developer-centric vocabulary [246].

Why it ranked here. Jira received 4 platform mentions at an average listed position of 3.25 and a best position of 2. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Grok rated the fit "good"; DeepSeek and Kimi rated it "mixed" [66].

Best suited for. Startups with up to 10 Jira users; software or product teams using backlogs, Kanban, Scrum, issues, and workflows; teams expecting to grow into paid Jira features later.

Main strengths for this use case. Free for up to 10 users with no credit card required and no time limit for active teams [93]. Unlimited projects and work items, plus Scrum and Kanban boards, backlog management, and multiple project views [97]. A clear upgrade path to Standard, Premium, and Enterprise [100]. Deep integration with development tooling, including GitHub and Bitbucket [173].

Main limitations. Only 2 GB of total file storage across all projects [66]. Free Jira sites do not provide customizable space permissions, roles, or work-item security [67]. Email notifications are capped at 100 per day [68]. Support is community-only on Free [66]. Atlassian reserves the right to deactivate Free Jira Cloud sites for inactivity [66]. Adding an 11th user triggers an automatic 7-day Standard trial rather than a hard block [100].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0 for up to 10 users. Standard is listed at approximately $7.91 per user per month in OpenAI's evidence and $8.15 per user per month in Kimi's, with annual billing lower [66]. Premium is listed at approximately $14.54 to $15.25 per user per month depending on source [131]. Atlassian Marketplace apps may carry separate costs [66].

Where platforms disagreed. The automation allowance is the most persistent conflict.

4. Notion

Questions explored

  • Is Notion worth it for a two-founder startup that needs free project management and shared documentation?
  • Which free project management tool should a solo founder choose if they want tasks, boards, and notes in one workspace?

Verdict. Notion Free is excellent for a solo founder and a hard wall for a team. Four platforms named it, and DeepSeek placed it first [113]. The decisive constraint is the block limit: unlimited pages and blocks apply to a single-member workspace, and adding a second member triggers a limited block allowance [111].

Why it ranked here. Notion received 4 platform mentions at an average listed position of 4.25 and a best position of 1. OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek rated the fit "good"; Google, Grok, and Kimi rated it "mixed" [113].

Best suited for. Solo founders organizing personal projects, launch checklists, and operating notes; very small teams willing to use a shared task database within the free block allowance; startups that want project management combined with documentation, meeting notes, and lightweight CRM-style databases.

Main strengths for this use case. $0 per member per month with no credit card required and no expiration [113]. Databases with subtasks, dependencies, custom properties, and multiple views, including Table, Board, Timeline, Calendar, Gallery, and List [203]. Combines project tracking with documentation and knowledge management in one tool. A clear upgrade path to Plus at $10 per member per month [113].

Main limitations. Free collaborative workspaces have a limited block allowance; Google's evidence cites a 1,000-block limit once a second workspace member is added [115]. File uploads are capped at 5 MB per file [113]. Page history is limited to 7 days [113]. Guests can be invited to specific pages but cannot create or edit workspace content [106]. Notion lacks out-of-box Gantt charts, sprint views, and time tracking, so founders must build these from database templates [203].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0 per member per month. Plus: $10 per member per month billed annually, $12 billed monthly. Business: $20 per member per month billed annually, $24 billed monthly. Enterprise: custom pricing. Custom Notion Sites domains are a separate paid add-on [113].

Where platforms disagreed. The block limit is the central conflict.

5. Linear

Questions explored

  • Is Linear worth it for a startup that expects to ship weekly and may exceed 250 issues?
  • Which free project management tool should a product-focused startup choose if it wants fast keyboard-driven issue tracking under 10 people?

Verdict. Linear Free is a strong fit for a small product team and a poor fit for a general startup. Three platforms named it, with OpenAI rating the fit "good" and DeepSeek and Kimi rating it "weak" [50]. The 250-issue cap is the deciding constraint: it is a workspace-wide cumulative limit, not a monthly allowance [50].

Why it ranked here. Linear received 3 platform mentions at an average listed position of 4.0 and a best position of 3. Its rank of 5 reflects fewer mentions than Notion despite a better average position, because the ranking rule weights mentions first.

Best suited for. Product-focused startups using issues, projects, cycles, labels, and lightweight workflows; solo founders or small teams that value fast keyboard-driven task management and a clear upgrade path; teams whose active backlog can remain below 250 issues and fit within two teams.

Main strengths for this use case. $0 plan with unlimited members per the official pricing page [50]. Core issues, projects, cycles, and initiatives included on Free [50]. Fast issue capture, keyboard shortcuts, search across issues and documents, and browser, desktop, and mobile access [43]. CSV export for issues and projects plus API and webhook access, which reduces lock-in risk [42].

Main limitations. 250-issue cap; after a downgrade, a workspace over 250 issues cannot create new issues until it is reduced or upgraded [50]. Free workspaces are limited to two teams [48]. File uploads are capped at 10 MB [50]. All users on the Free plan are administrators, and guest accounts and private teams require Business or Enterprise [44]. Linear's issue-centric model may be less familiar to non-technical users [50].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0. Basic: $10 per user per month billed yearly. Business: $16 per user per month billed yearly. Enterprise: custom, annual billing only. Sales tax may apply in several U.S. jurisdictions [50].

Where platforms disagreed. The member limit is the most serious unresolved conflict. Linear's official pricing page states "Unlimited members" on Free, while Anthropic's bundle cites independent sources reporting a February 2026 reduction to a 10-member cap, and Kimi's bundle reports a hard 1-user limit [50].

6. Asana

Questions explored

  • Is Asana worth it for a three-person startup that needs free project management, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free project management tool should a two-founder team choose if it only needs basic task lists and boards?

Verdict. Asana Personal is a strong free tool for one or two people and a weak one for a startup team. Three platforms named it, and all three rated the fit "mixed" [30]. The current free plan caps at two seats per project and team, down from a legacy 10-seat limit for accounts created before November 12, 2025 [30].

Why it ranked here. Asana received 3 platform mentions at an average listed position of 4.67 and a best position of 3. Its rank of 6 reflects the lowest average position among the three-mention group.

Best suited for. Solo founders; two-person founding teams; startups willing to use Asana first and upgrade as the team grows.

Main strengths for this use case. Unlimited tasks and projects on the free plan with list, board, and calendar views [8]. No credit card required, and the plan is described as free forever [31]. More than 100 integrations included on the free tier [215]. A clean, well-regarded interface that non-technical founders adopt quickly [194].

Main limitations. Two seats per project and team on current free accounts [30]. No timeline or Gantt views, no custom fields, no forms, no automation rules, and no reporting dashboards on Free [276]. All paid plans require a minimum of two seats, so a solo founder needing premium features pays for an unused seat [243]. Google's evidence notes that seat-bundle billing can charge a six-person team for ten seats [216].

Pricing or cost summary. Personal: $0. Starter: $10.99 per user per month billed annually, $13.49 billed monthly. Advanced: $24.99 per user per month billed annually, $30.49 billed monthly. AI Studio credits are an additional purchase on Starter and above [8].

Where platforms disagreed. The seat limit is the dominant conflict. OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, and Google all describe a 2-seat cap for new accounts, while DeepSeek's bundle cites the Asana pricing page at 10 users and a help-center article at 15 for some legacy tiers [30]. Kimi's bundle goes further and describes the Personal plan as limited to 1 user [3].

7. Airtable

Questions explored

  • Is Airtable worth it for a startup that needs free project management with linked records and forms?
  • Which free project management tool should a five-person startup choose if it needs more than five editors?

Verdict. Airtable Free is a flexible database that can double as a task manager, but its limits bite early. Two platforms named it, and all six platforms that assessed fit rated it "mixed" [1]. The 1,000-record-per-base cap and the five-editor limit are the two constraints that most often force an upgrade [63].

Why it ranked here. Airtable received 2 platform mentions at an average listed position of 5.5 and a best position of 5.

Best suited for. Solo founders and very small teams managing lightweight task lists; startups that need customizable task fields, linked records, forms, or a database-style workflow; teams comfortable configuring their own workspace rather than using a purpose-built task manager.

Main strengths for this use case. $0 plan with unlimited bases and grid and Kanban views on all plans [1]. Custom fields, linked records, and forms support more than a simple checklist. Unlimited read-only collaborators, up to five Editor or Creator collaborators, and up to 50 Commenter collaborators [59]. A direct upgrade path to Team at $20 per user per month billed annually [1].

Main limitations. 1,000 records per base, counted cumulatively across tables in a base [63]. Only five Editor or Creator collaborators on Free [59]. Gantt views are paid-only, and free calendar functionality is limited [62]. Automation is capped at 100 runs per month per workspace, and the Run a script action is unavailable [61]. A new account's first workspace automatically receives a 14-day Team trial, and adding a payment method during the trial can trigger automatic conversion to paid [1].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0. Team: $20 per user per month billed annually, $24 billed monthly. Business: $45 per user per month billed annually, $54 billed monthly. Enterprise Scale: custom. Paid plans charge per seat for users with edit permissions; read-only collaborators, form submissions, and share links are not charged [1].

Where platforms disagreed. The record limit is reported at 1,000 by most sources and 1,200 by one older source [172].

8. Freedcamp

Questions explored

  • Is Freedcamp worth it for a bootstrapped startup that needs unlimited free users and projects?
  • Which free project management tool should a startup choose if it needs unlimited seats but can accept a 10 MB per-file upload limit?

Verdict. Freedcamp offers the most generous headline free limits in this index and the least verified evidence. Two platforms named it, and both placed it fifth or better [254]. Four of six platforms rated the fit "strong," but Kimi's bundle could not verify any current Freedcamp plan details and rated the fit "uncertain" [254].

Why it ranked here. Freedcamp received 2 platform mentions at an average listed position of 6.0 and a best position of 5. Its rank of 8 reflects fewer mentions than Airtable at a lower average position.

Best suited for. Bootstrapped startups that need unlimited projects and users without a software budget; solo founders and small teams managing tasks, deadlines, files, discussions, and milestones; teams that may later need paid features such as larger file uploads, integrations, advanced reporting, or premium applications.

Main strengths for this use case. The Free plan advertises unlimited users, projects, tasks, and storage subject to a fair-usage policy [22]. Core applications include Tasks, Calendar, Files, Milestones, Discussions, Time, and Passwords [22]. No credit card required, and the plan is described as free forever with no trial clock [150]. A very low upgrade path: Pro at $1.49 per user per month billed annually or $2.49 billed monthly [22].

Main limitations. A 10 MB maximum upload size per file, even though total storage is advertised as unlimited [22]. Gantt charts, timeline views, dashboards, and table views are reserved for paid plans [26]. Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive integrations require Pro or above [242]. The interface is described by multiple reviewers as dated [242]. Free-plan backup and data-recovery protection is limited or unclear [25]. Kanban-board availability on the Free plan is not clearly verified in the reviewed official material [22].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0. Pro: $1.49 per user per month billed annually, $2.49 billed monthly. Business: $7.49 per user per month billed annually, $8.99 billed monthly. Enterprise: $16.99 per user per month billed annually, $19.99 billed monthly. Private cloud is an Enterprise option with a separate fixed yearly cost not stated in the reviewed source [22].

9. Monday.com

Questions explored

  • Is Monday.com worth it for a startup team of three or more that needs free project management?
  • Which free project management tool should a solo founder choose if they want a polished visual board and may upgrade later?

Verdict. Monday.com Free is a polished board for one or two people and effectively closed to larger teams. Two platforms named it, and five of six platforms rated the fit "weak," with only OpenAI rating it "mixed" [284]. The 2-seat cap is the decisive constraint.

Why it ranked here. Monday.com received 2 platform mentions at an average listed position of 7.0 and a best position of 6.

Best suited for. Solo founders; founders working with one active collaborator; very small teams willing to keep work within three boards and 200 active items.

Main strengths for this use case. $0 plan described as free forever with no credit card required [55]. Up to three boards, up to three Docs, 200+ templates, eight column types, and iOS and Android apps [55]. A polished, intuitive interface that non-technical founders adopt quickly [137]. A clear upgrade path to Basic at $9 per seat per month billed annually [55].

Main limitations. Two seats maximum on Free, with no viewers or guests [76]. Three boards and 200 total starting items, expandable to 1,000 through referrals [76]. No automations and no integrations on Free [76]. 500 MB of storage [76]. All paid plans enforce a three-seat minimum, so a solo founder upgrading pays for three seats [303]. Exceeding Free limits after a downgrade puts existing content into view-only mode [76].

Pricing or cost summary. Free: $0 for up to two seats. Basic: $9 per seat per month billed annually, with a three-seat minimum. Standard: $12 per seat per month billed annually, also with a three-seat minimum. Pro: $19 per seat per month billed annually. AI credits are billed alongside Standard and Pro plans starting in 2026 [55].

Where platforms disagreed. The item cap is reported inconsistently: most sources cite 200 starting items expandable to 1,000 through referrals, while one source references unlimited items and another references unlimited boards [76].

10. Todoist

Questions explored

  • Is Todoist worth it for a startup that needs free project management across more than five concurrent projects?
  • Which free project management tool should a solo founder choose if they mainly need fast task capture and reminders?

Verdict. Todoist Free is an excellent personal task manager and a limited project management system. Two platforms named it, and five of six platforms rated the fit "mixed," with only DeepSeek rating it "good" [120]. The five-project cap is the constraint that most often forces an upgrade.

Why it ranked here. Todoist received 2 platform mentions at an average listed position of 8.5 and a best position of 7.

Best suited for. Solo founders organizing personal and startup work in a small number of projects; teams under 10 that need lightweight task lists or Kanban-style boards; startups prioritizing fast setup, reminders, recurring tasks, and integrations over reporting or advanced collaboration controls.

Main strengths for this use case. $0 plan described as free forever with no credit card required [120]. Smart Quick Add with natural-language parsing, list and board layouts, sections, and task reminders [120]. Cross-platform sync across web, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux [186]. A clear upgrade path to Pro at $5 per user per month billed annually [120].

Main limitations. Five active personal projects and five active team projects on Free [120]. Only three filters and one week of activity history [120]. 5 MB comment-attachment limit [120]. No calendar layout, no custom reminders, and no AI features on Free [160]. No native time tracking or project-level reporting on any plan [78]. The free team workspace is limited to five active team projects, three team filters, one week of team activity history, and up to five guests [52].

Pricing or cost summary. Free/Beginner: $0. Pro: $5 per user per month billed annually, $7 billed monthly. Business: $8 per user per month billed annually, $10 billed monthly, plus local tax [120].

Where platforms disagreed. Kanban availability is the sharpest conflict. OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, and Google all describe board layout as available on the free plan, while Kimi's bundle states that native Kanban boards require Pro [119].

What this study reveals

Questions explored

  • What do AI platforms consistently say about free project management tools for startups in 2026?
  • Which free project management tools appear across the most AI platform recommendations for startups?

Three patterns hold across the evidence.

Free tiers are shaped by seat count, not feature count. The single most decisive variable in this index is how many people can edit for free. ClickUp and Trello allow the most free collaborators; Asana and Monday.com cap at two; Notion caps collaborative editing at one member with a block limit for teams. Feature lists are broadly similar across the top five; seat economics are not.

Storage is the second decisive variable, and it is small everywhere. ClickUp lists 60 MB, Jira 2 GB, Airtable 1 GB per base, Monday.com 500 MB, and Notion 5 MB per file. Trello is the outlier with unlimited total storage but a 10 MB per-file cap. For any startup that attaches design files, recordings, or large documents, storage - not task capacity - is the first limit reached.

The upgrade path is priced low and designed to be reached. ClickUp Unlimited at $7 per user per month, Trello Standard at $5, Freedcamp Pro at $1.49, and Todoist Pro at $5 are all inexpensive relative to the friction of the free limits.

Where the AI Platforms Agreed

Questions explored

  • Which free project management tools do OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Grok, DeepSeek, and Kimi agree on for startups?

Agreement was strongest on four points.

ClickUp and Trello belong at the top. Five of six platforms named each, and no platform placed either below fourth. OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, and Google all ranked ClickUp first [13]. OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and Grok all ranked Trello second [82].

No credit card is required on the leading free tiers. OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, and Google all confirm this for ClickUp; OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and Grok confirm it for Trello; OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Grok confirm it for Jira [11].

Free plans are permanent, not trials. Multiple platforms explicitly note that ClickUp Free Forever, Trello Free, Jira Free, and Notion Free do not expire or auto-convert [285].

Storage and permissions are the recurring weak points. Every platform that assessed ClickUp, Jira, Airtable, Monday.com, or Notion flagged storage or permission limits as the main constraint on the free tier [282].

Where the AI Platforms Disagreed

Questions explored

  • What should a startup founder check before choosing a free project management tool for a team of four?
  • Which free project management tool should a startup pick if it needs unlimited free seats and unlimited tasks?

Work through four questions in order.

1. How many people must edit? If the answer is three or more, ClickUp is the only top-ranked option with unlimited free-plan members [13]. Trello covers up to 10 collaborators but caps boards at 10 [75]. Asana and Monday.com cap at two seats, and Notion caps collaborative editing at one member with a block limit for teams [30].

2. How much do you attach? If the team stores design files, recordings, or large documents inside the tool, ClickUp's 60 MB and Notion's 5 MB per file will fail first [13]. Jira's 2 GB and Airtable's 1 GB per base are more forgiving [66]. Trello has unlimited total storage but a 10 MB per-file cap [82].

3. Is the work software development? If yes, Jira and Linear are the natural fits, and both include real agile structure on the free tier [97].

Methodology

This index was produced from a single standardized prompt sent once to each of six AI platforms on October 1, 2026. The prompt described a first-time startup founder with a team of four, no software budget, and a need to organize tasks, deadlines, and project boards on a permanently free plan rather than a time-limited trial.

Platforms included: OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Grok, Kimi, and Google. The configured platform count of 7 is provenance metadata only; 6 platforms were studied.

Each platform returned a ranked list of recommended providers. Entities named by at least two platforms qualified for the final index. Of 21 unique entities named, 10 qualified.

Ranking order is determined by platform mentions first, then average listed position, then best listed position. The ranking table is the sole authority for rank, mentions, share, average position, and best position. Platform mentions count only ranking-discovery mentions; a platform that later assessed an entity without naming it during ranking discovery does not add to its mention count.

Fit assessments, pricing, strengths, limitations, and disagreements come from the entity evidence bundles. Citations are platform-reported evidence, not independently verified facts. Company-owned sources are distinguished from independent sources where the bundles provide that information; for example, Trello's bundle contains materially more company-owned than independent citations, and ClickUp's bundle contains more independent than owned citations.

Research limitations

Several limitations apply to every finding in this report.

One prompt, one run. The study used one standardized prompt sent once to each platform. Different wording, a different buyer description, or a second run could produce different recommendations.

Answers vary by context. AI answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved. The results here describe one snapshot.

Platform-reported dates differ from the study date. DeepSeek reported a research date of June 1, 2026 for ClickUp and June 11, 2026 for Monday.com; Anthropic and DeepSeek reported January 15, 2026 for Trello; DeepSeek reported January 15, 2026 for Jira, Airtable, Freedcamp, and Todoist; DeepSeek reported June 16, 2026 for Notion; Anthropic reported January 15, 2026 and DeepSeek February 14, 2026 for Linear; DeepSeek reported June 12, 2026 for Asana. These are provenance metadata and do not independently prove freshness.

Search capability varied. DeepSeek ran without search enabled, so its findings are model-reported rather than retrieved, and it repeatedly flagged limits as unverified. The other five platforms ran with search enabled.

Official pages were retrieved but not verified. Several official pricing pages were retrieved as excerpts with a "retrieved_not_verified" status. The Atlassian, Asana, and monday.com pricing pages could not be retrieved at all during this run.

The consensus assessment

ClickUp is the consensus leader for free project management for startups, named by 5 of 6 platforms at an average listed position of 1.6 and a best position of 1. Its combination of unlimited tasks, unlimited free-plan members, and no credit card requirement is unmatched in this index, and its 60 MB storage cap is the clearest reason a growing team would upgrade.

Trello is the strongest alternative for teams that want the fastest possible setup and can live within 10 collaborators and 10 boards. Jira is the right choice for software and product teams that need Scrum, Kanban, and backlog structure under 10 users. Notion is excellent for a solo founder who wants tasks and documentation in one workspace and a hard wall for teams. Linear suits disciplined product teams that stay under 250 issues. Asana, Monday.com, and Todoist are best for one or two people. Airtable suits database-style workflows. Freedcamp offers the most generous headline limits with the least verified evidence.

No single tool wins on every axis. The seat limit, the storage limit, and the tolerance for configuration decide the answer more than any feature list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free project management software for startups in 2026? ClickUp ranks first in this index, named by 5 of 6 platforms at an average listed position of 1.6. It combines unlimited tasks, unlimited free-plan members, and no credit card requirement, with a 60 MB storage cap as its main constraint.

Which free project management tool is best for a software development team? Jira Cloud Free is the leading option for software and product teams, with Scrum and Kanban boards, backlog management, and unlimited projects and work items for up to 10 users.

Study limitations

  • Recommendation counts measure mentions during the ranking stage. Later fit assessments do not increase those counts.
  • Some evidence identifiers refer to individual platform responses rather than independently verified sources.
  • Source URLs came from AI platform responses and were not independently validated during report preparation.

Affiliate & commercial disclosure

We may receive compensation when you follow certain links, subscribe to a software plan, or take another qualifying action through a commercial partner. These relationships create a potential financial conflict, but do not influence recorded AI recommendations or ranking calculations. Partner availability, pricing, features, and service terms can vary.
