The research in brief

Brevo ranks first in this 7-platform AI consensus index of free email marketing platforms for startups, named by all seven platforms studied (100.0% share, average listed position 2.86). Sender ranks second (6 mentions, 85.7%, average 1.50) and is the strongest alternative for founders who need a large monthly send allowance without a daily cap. MailerLite, Zoho Campaigns, Kit, EmailOctopus, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Systeme.io, and Loops complete the ten qualifying entities. The consensus leader is not the best fit for every buyer: Brevo's 300-email daily cap, mandatory branding, and mixed independent deliverability evidence make it a poor match for same-day full-list launches, while Sender, EmailOctopus, and Systeme.io better serve higher-volume or all-in-one needs. The principal limitation is methodological: this study used one standardized prompt sent once to each included platform, and AI answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved.

1. Brevo

Questions explored

  • Is Brevo worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it needs to email more than 300 recipients in a single day?

Brevo ranks first because it was the only entity named by all seven platforms studied, with an average listed position of 2.86 and a best position of 1. Its free plan is unusually capable on storage and unusually restrictive on daily volume, which is the central tension buyers must resolve before choosing it. The complete Brevo fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Brevo was named by ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Kimi, and Gemini - a 100.0% share of platform responses. Its average listed position of 2.86 is the second-highest average among the top three, but its universal mention is what places it first. Platforms consistently described the same core trade: a free-forever plan with contact storage far beyond the target buyer's need, paired with a hard daily send ceiling.

Best suited for. Startups with under 1,000 contacts sending newsletters or product updates to no more than 300 recipients per day; founders who want unlimited contact storage and an upgrade path priced primarily by email volume rather than contact count; and simple welcome or onboarding automation, provided the automation-entry limit is acceptable.

Main strengths for the use case. The Free plan allows up to 100,000 stored contacts, so a buyer with fewer than 1,000 contacts sits far below the storage limit [16]. The plan permits 300 email sends per day, roughly 9,000 per month [301]. Brevo states the Free plan includes essential features at no cost indefinitely, and independent reviews report a drag-and-drop editor, templates, basic automation, segmentation, and a free CRM [16]. Signup requires only an email and password with no credit card, and one source describes email verification completing in under 90 seconds [191]. Paid plans are positioned around email volume rather than contact count, with Starter reported at $9/month monthly or $8.08/month billed annually, starting at 5,000 emails [326].

Main limitations. The 300-email daily cap is a hard wall, not a soft monthly pool: a campaign addressed to more than 300 people sends only to 300 recipients that day and requires manual requeuing for the remainder [184].

2. Sender

Questions explored

  • Is Sender worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Is Sender or Brevo better for a startup that needs to email its full list in one day without paying?

Sender ranks second with 6 platform mentions (85.7% share), an average listed position of 1.50 - the best average in the index - and a best position of 1. It was named by Claude, Gemini, Grok, Kimi, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its free tier is the most generous on raw volume among the qualifying entities. The complete Sender fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Sender's average listed position of 1.50 is the strongest in the table, and it was named by six of seven platforms. It ranks second rather than first only because Brevo received one additional mention. Platforms converged on the same description: a free plan with 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 monthly emails, no daily sending limit, and automation included.

Best suited for. Startups with under 1,000 active subscribers; founders needing newsletters, welcome sequences, signup forms, and basic segmentation without paying; and buyers who can accept Sender branding and a single-user workspace.

Main strengths for the use case. The Free Forever plan supports up to 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month, above the target buyer's under-1,000-contact requirement [158]. Sender lists newsletters, email automation, landing pages, signup forms and popups, transactional emails, segmentation, analytics, integrations, and a drag-and-drop editor as available on the free plan [158]. One platform reported that the free tier includes automation, landing pages, signup forms, and transactional email with no daily sending limit - features it said competitors typically paywall [200]. Sender states the Free Forever plan includes unlimited automation workflows within the plan's subscriber and monthly-email limits [150]. Setup is described as fast, with one source reporting setup takes under 10 minutes [302]. Support is available on the free plan, with 24/7 live chat reported at every pricing tier including free [181]. No credit card is required [157].

Main limitations. Sender branding is required on free-plan emails, forms, and landing pages [158]. Only one seat is included [158]. Email A/B testing is not included on the free tier [158]. The 15,000-email monthly ceiling can become restrictive for frequent sends or large automated sequences [158]. No dedicated IP is included; the free plan uses shared sending infrastructure [152].

3. MailerLite

Questions explored

  • Is MailerLite worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if its list will stay under 250 subscribers?

MailerLite ranks third with 6 platform mentions (85.7% share), an average listed position of 5.50, and a best position of 1. It was named by Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, Kimi, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its ranking is driven by a wide spread of positions - from first on one platform to eighth on two others - reflecting a genuine disagreement about whether its reduced free tier still fits the stated buyer. The complete MailerLite fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. MailerLite's best position of 1 shows at least one platform considered it the top free option for this buyer. Its average of 5.50 reflects that most platforms treated the current free limits as a material mismatch with an under-1,000-contact requirement.

Best suited for. Solo founders with no more than 250 active subscribers; pre-revenue startups sending low-volume newsletters or welcome sequences; and buyers who value built-in forms, landing pages, and basic automations.

Main strengths for the use case. The Free Plan includes email campaigns, three active automations, three signup forms, one landing page, one website with up to five pages, one digital product or booking, and two user seats [139]. MailerLite provides drag-and-drop campaign creation, embedded and pop-up forms, landing pages, and a 14-day premium-feature trial [139]. Two user seats on a free plan is unusual and useful for a solo founder plus a contractor or co-founder [133]. MailerLite includes a one-click list-unsubscribe header by default and requires an unsubscribe link and physical postal address in campaign footers [134]. One platform reported the platform has been awarded Best of 5 by Email Tool Tester for deliverability, with free-plan users accessing the same core deliverability infrastructure as paid users [133]. No credit card is required to start [139].

Main limitations. The current Free Plan limit is 250 active subscribers, not 1,000 [139]. Exceeding the limit can pause sending campaigns, automations, and new subscriber additions until the list is reduced or the account is upgraded [139]. The Free Plan allows up to 2,500 email sends per month, and a send is counted per recipient [139]. MailerLite branding appears in newsletters, landing pages, and websites on the Free Plan; removing it requires Comfort or Power [140].

4. Zoho Campaigns

Questions explored

  • Is Zoho Campaigns worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it needs a permanent free tier with a very low paid upgrade price?

Zoho Campaigns ranks fourth with 6 platform mentions (85.7% share), an average listed position of 6.83, and a best position of 3. It was named by DeepSeek, Gemini, Grok, Kimi, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its free contact and send allowances comfortably exceed the target buyer's needs, but its free-tier feature restrictions are the most severe among the top five. The complete Zoho Campaigns fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Zoho Campaigns received six mentions but a comparatively weak average position of 6.83, with platform ranks ranging from 3 to 9. Platforms agreed on the headline limits and disagreed on how much the free-tier feature restrictions matter for a startup.

Best suited for. Startups with fewer than 1,000 contacts; founders sending newsletters, product updates, or occasional promotional campaigns; buyers wanting a permanent free tier rather than a short trial; and teams that may benefit from Zoho integrations or a later upgrade path.

Main strengths for the use case. The Forever Free plan supports up to 2,000 contacts, which covers the target buyer's under-1,000-contact requirement [166]. The plan includes up to 6,000 emails per month, and Zoho states there is no separate daily email limit [166]. The published plan comparison lists list management, templates, drag-and-drop editing, HTML import, generative AI, integrations, and basic reporting on Forever Free [167]. Zoho lists integrations with tools including Zoho CRM, Google Contacts, Shopify, Eventbrite, SurveyMonkey, WordPress, and Dropbox, with 35 available integrations on the Forever Free plan [167]. One platform reported the free plan supports up to 5 users, allowing small teams to collaborate [166]. Email and telephonic support are reported as included even on the free plan [166]. The paid upgrade path is among the cheapest in the index.

Main limitations. Zoho's help documentation states the new free plan restricts attachments, segmentation, scheduled campaigns, recipient-timezone delivery, dynamic content, polls, campaign comparison, archives, advanced campaigns, automation, e-commerce email marketing, managerial approval, custom roles, webhooks, and SMS campaigns [39]. One platform reported the free plan is capped at exactly three campaign sends per month, preventing weekly newsletters [252].

5. Kit

Questions explored

  • Is Kit worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it needs unlimited email sends but does not need automated sequences?

Kit ranks fifth with 5 platform mentions (71.4% share), an average listed position of 3.60, and a best position of 1. It was named by Claude, Gemini, Grok, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its free subscriber ceiling is the highest in the index, but its free plan excludes the automated sequences many startups need. The complete Kit fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Kit's average of 3.60 is the third-strongest in the index, and one platform placed it first. It ranks fifth rather than higher because it received five mentions rather than six or seven, and because platforms disagreed sharply on whether its free plan includes any automation at all.

Best suited for. Founders sending newsletters, product updates, launch announcements, or other one-off broadcasts; early-stage businesses needing landing pages, signup forms, tagging, segmentation, and unlimited sends without a monthly fee; and buyers who expect to grow beyond 1,000 contacts without immediately changing platforms.

Main strengths for the use case. Kit Free costs $0 while the account remains at or below 10,000 email subscribers, substantially exceeding the target buyer's under-1,000-contact requirement [29]. Kit states the Free plan includes unlimited email broadcasts, and its pricing FAQ states there are no sending limits on any plan [47]. The Free plan includes unlimited forms and landing pages, audience tagging and segmentation, digital products and subscriptions, broadcast A/B testing, API access, and Creator Network recommendations [29]. One platform reported the free plan supports up to 10,000 subscribers with no time limit and no credit card required [310]. One platform reported Kit demonstrated a 99.8% email deliverability success rate in third-party testing, using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication and automatically removing bounced addresses [176]. Support is available on the Free plan, with free-plan requests answered in received order within 24 hours according to Kit's help documentation [29].

Main limitations. Visual automations, automation templates, email sequences, rules, and RSS campaigns require a paid plan, and automations and sequences stop running after downgrading to Free [29]. Kit branding appears on free-plan emails and landing pages [208]. One platform reported the free plan is limited to one user account only, with advanced reporting, A/B testing, engagement scoring, and subscriber signals requiring paid plans [208].

6. EmailOctopus

Questions explored

  • Is EmailOctopus worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it needs basic automation and 2,500 free contacts?

EmailOctopus ranks sixth with 5 platform mentions (71.4% share), an average listed position of 4.00, and a best position of 2. It was named by Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, Grok, and Kimi. It combines generous free capacity with a basic automation allowance, but its free plan carries branding, a single user, and short report retention. The complete EmailOctopus fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. EmailOctopus's average of 4.00 is the fourth-strongest in the index, and one platform placed it second. It ranks sixth because it received five mentions and because platforms split on whether its free-tier support and reporting limits matter for a pre-revenue founder.

Best suited for. Startups with fewer than 1,000 subscribed contacts; founders sending newsletters, product updates, onboarding emails, or basic welcome sequences; buyers prioritizing a free-forever plan and simple setup; and teams willing to retain EmailOctopus branding and operate with one account user.

Main strengths for the use case. The free Starter plan allows up to 2,500 contacts, which exceeds the target buyer's requirement of under 1,000 contacts [20]. The free plan allows up to 10,000 emails per month [20]. The free plan includes campaign creation, email templates and editor access, up to three automations with up to five steps each, one landing page, one form, and up to 10 fields and 10 tags per list [20]. The free plan does not require a credit card and has no stated time limit [14]. One platform reported EmailOctopus uses Amazon SES for sending, described as a deliverability-oriented infrastructure and a differentiator versus some free competitors [175]. One platform reported the free plan includes basic automated drip campaigns and welcome series [246]. One platform reported the company has publicly committed to keeping the free plan available [10].

Main limitations. Free users are limited to one account user, campaign reports are available for 30 days, subscribers cannot update their data through the subscriber-profile feature, and campaigns must include an EmailOctopus link [20]. Only one landing page and one form are included [20]. Live chat support on the free plan is limited to the first 30 days [20].

7. Mailchimp

Questions explored

  • Is Mailchimp worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup avoid if it expects to grow past 250 contacts without paying?

Mailchimp ranks seventh with 5 platform mentions (71.4% share), an average listed position of 6.00, and a best position of 3. It was named by Claude, DeepSeek, Kimi, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its free tier is now among the smallest in the index, and platforms broadly treated it as a weak fit for the stated buyer. The complete Mailchimp fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Mailchimp's best position of 3 came from one platform, while others placed it as low as tenth. Its average of 6.00 reflects a broad consensus that the current free tier no longer matches an under-1,000-contact requirement.

Best suited for. Solo founders with no more than 250 contacts; infrequent newsletters or early audience testing; and buyers who value a straightforward upgrade path and basic reporting.

Main strengths for the use case. The Free plan includes one audience, one seat, basic reporting, limited templates, forms, landing pages, popup forms, A/B testing, and basic marketing automation flows [83]. One platform described Mailchimp as having the most polished user experience of any email marketing tool at this price point, with a clean dashboard, guided campaign creation flow, and helpful tooltips [218]. One platform reported Mailchimp has 11+ million active accounts and 500+ million emails sent daily, with sender reputation monitoring, bounce management, and DKIM/SPF authentication [174]. Mailchimp allows users to change or pause plans from the billing page and states that users can downgrade to the Free plan [81].

Main limitations. The current Free Marketing plan allows a maximum of 250 contacts, not 500 or 1,000 [80]. The Free plan includes up to 500 email sends per month, with a 250-send daily limit [80]. If the account exceeds the free contact or send limit, Mailchimp states that sending is paused until the buyer upgrades or reduces the contact total [80]. Free-plan template access is limited, and the plan does not provide the broader feature set associated with paid plans [83]. One platform reported that automation was fully stripped from the free tier by mid-2025, leaving only a single-step welcome email trigger [212]. One platform reported that unsubscribed and non-confirmed contacts still count toward the contact limit [269].

8. HubSpot

Questions explored

  • Is HubSpot worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it wants email marketing and CRM records in one system?

HubSpot ranks eighth with 5 platform mentions (71.4% share), an average listed position of 8.40, and a best position of 6. It was named by Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Its distinguishing feature is a free CRM bundled with basic email sending, but its free send allowance and lack of free automation limit its fit for the stated buyer. The complete HubSpot fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. HubSpot's average of 8.40 is the weakest in the index, and its best position of 6 is the lowest best-position among all ten entities. Platforms agreed that the free tier is genuinely free but poorly matched to a startup that needs to email a growing list.

Best suited for. Founders who want email marketing and CRM records in one system; newsletters, product updates, launch announcements, and occasional customer emails; startups sending fewer than approximately two emails per contact per month; and buyers who value a clear upgrade path and do not initially require advanced automation.

Main strengths for the use case. HubSpot's free marketing tools list up to 2,000 marketing email sends per calendar month with HubSpot branding [116]. The email editor supports regular one-time or scheduled marketing emails, templates, recipient selection, previewing, testing, and performance analysis [53]. HubSpot supports subscription types and unsubscribe handling, and free-tool accounts can add basic subscription types manually when data privacy settings are enabled [56]. HubSpot describes its free CRM as browser-based, requiring no downloads or IT support, with onboarding and setup guides [120]. One platform reported the free plan includes unlimited contact storage for non-marketing contacts plus basic CRM features: deal tracking with one pipeline, shared inbox, email tracking, and contact and company management [288]. One platform reported the free plan includes a drag-and-drop email editor with built-in AI assistance [303]. One platform reported the free plan requires no credit card and is genuinely free forever with no expiration [126].

Main limitations. Automated marketing emails created through workflows are available only with Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, so the free plan is suitable for broadcasts but not for a normal automated welcome or onboarding sequence [53]. Free email marketing sends include HubSpot branding, and removing that branding requires a paid tier [116].

9. Systeme.io

Questions explored

  • Is Systeme.io worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a startup choose if it needs unlimited email sends plus funnels or a simple website?

Systeme.io ranks ninth with 4 platform mentions (57.1% share), an average listed position of 4.75, and a best position of 2. It was named by Gemini, Grok, Kimi, and Perplexity. Its free plan combines unlimited sends with an all-in-one funnel and website stack, but it requires a custom authenticated domain and its free deliverability is not independently verified. The complete Systeme.io fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Systeme.io's average of 4.75 is the fifth-strongest in the index, and one platform placed it second. It ranks ninth because it received only four mentions, the second-lowest count among qualifying entities.

Best suited for. Startups needing broadcasts and basic automated sequences without a monthly fee; founders who also need landing pages, funnels, checkout, or a simple website; and buyers with under 1,000 contacts who can configure a custom domain.

Main strengths for the use case. The current Free plan lists a limit of 2,000 contacts, so the target buyer's under-1,000-contact requirement is within the stated limit [93]. Systeme.io states that the Free plan includes unlimited email sending and does not impose a daily or monthly send cap [88]. The Free plan is described as supporting broadcasts, automated sequences, tagging, segmentation, newsletter scheduling, a drag-and-drop editor, and performance statistics [88]. Email is integrated with forms, funnels, websites, checkout, and automation triggers, reducing the need for a separate email tool or connector for basic lead capture and follow-up [88]. One platform reported the free plan includes 3 sales funnels, 1 blog, 1 online course, unlimited file storage, and 1 custom domain [214]. One platform reported startups can accept payments natively via Stripe and PayPal integrations on the Free plan, with 0% transaction fees charged by Systeme.io [240]. One platform reported most beginners send their first campaign within the first day of signing up [88]. One platform reported contacts above the 2,000 limit are archived rather than deleted and restored upon upgrading [232].

Main limitations. Systeme.io requires domain authentication for email sending and recommends SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configuration, an active website on the sending domain, sender-address confirmation, gradual sending, and list hygiene [36].

10. Loops

Questions explored

  • Is Loops worth it for free email marketing for startups, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which free email marketing platform should a SaaS startup choose if it needs marketing and transactional email in one system?

Loops ranks tenth with 3 platform mentions (42.9% share), an average listed position of 7.00, and a best position of 6. It was named by Claude, Grok, and Kimi. It is the only entity in the index positioned specifically for SaaS product email, combining marketing and transactional sending on one free plan. The complete Loops fit review covers the full plan matrix.

Why it ranked here. Loops received the fewest mentions of any qualifying entity, at three, and its average of 7.00 reflects that platforms treated it as a narrower fit than the general-purpose options above it. It qualified because it was named by at least two platforms.

Best suited for. SaaS startups sending product updates, onboarding sequences, and transactional messages; founders with up to 1,000 subscribed contacts and modest monthly email volume; and technical founders comfortable verifying a sending domain and optionally using integrations or an API.

Main strengths for the use case. The Free Plan supports up to 1,000 stored subscribed contacts, and the pricing page states that exactly 1,000 contacts qualifies for Free [67]. The Free Plan permits up to 4,000 combined marketing and transactional sends in any rolling 30-day window [67]. Loops states that all platform features are included on Free, including marketing and transactional email, with a small "Powered by Loops" footer on outgoing email [67]. The product supports campaigns for one-off marketing emails, automated Loops triggered by contact or event conditions, contact properties, filters, and reusable segments [60]. One platform reported all core features are included on the free tier: automation workflows, segmentation, campaigns, event-based targeting, transactional email, and webhooks, with no feature gating [202]. One platform reported Loops reports a 98% inbox placement rate, handles DMARC, DKIM, and SPF automatically, and uses intelligent queueing to optimize send timing [209]. One platform reported the free plan includes REST APIs and SDKs for Node, Next.js, Ruby, PHP, Nuxt, and Laravel, with unlimited free team seats [229]. One platform reported signup, domain verification, and first email can be completed within minutes [209].

Main limitations. The 4,000-send limit is shared across marketing and transactional email [67]. Free emails carry Loops branding [67].

What this study reveals

Questions explored

  • What do AI platforms agree on about free email marketing for startups in 2026?
  • Which free email marketing platforms offer the most generous free contact limits for a startup under 1,000 contacts?

Three structural patterns emerge from the ten qualifying entities.

First, free-tier generosity is split between two incompatible models. Contact-based generosity (Brevo's 100,000 stored contacts, Kit's 10,000 subscribers, Sender's 2,500 subscribers, EmailOctopus's 2,500 contacts, Zoho Campaigns's 2,000 contacts, Systeme.io's 2,000 contacts, HubSpot's 1,000 marketing contacts) competes with send-based generosity (Sender's 15,000 emails/month, EmailOctopus's 10,000 emails/month, Brevo's 300 emails/day, Kit's unlimited broadcasts, Systeme.io's unlimited sends). No qualifying entity offers both unlimited contacts and unlimited sends on a free plan.

Second, the free tiers in this index are not stable. MailerLite reduced its free subscriber cap twice within nine months, from 1,000 to 500 on September 23, 2025, and from 500 to 250 on June 16, 2026, with email sends adjusted from 12,000 to 2,500 [139]. Mailchimp's free tier shrank from 2,000 contacts in 2022 to 500 in 2023 to 250 contacts and 500 sends per month in February 2026 [212].

Where the AI Platforms Agreed

Questions explored

  • Which free email marketing platform do most AI platforms recommend for startups with under 1,000 contacts?

Platforms converged on several points.

  • Brevo's free-tier structure. All seven platforms that named Brevo described the same core trade: unlimited or near-unlimited contact storage paired with a 300-email daily cap, mandatory branding, and a volume-based upgrade path [16].
  • Sender's free-tier volume. Six platforms described the Free Forever plan as 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month with no daily sending limit [158].
  • Mailchimp's reduced free tier. Five platforms described the current free plan as 250 contacts and 500 sends per month, with sending paused when limits are exceeded [80].
  • HubSpot's free CRM bundling. Five platforms described the free tier as pairing basic email sending with a free CRM, while noting the absence of free workflow automation and custom sending-domain authentication [116].

Where the AI Platforms Disagreed

Questions explored

  • Why do AI platforms disagree about free email marketing platform limits, and what should a buyer verify before choosing?

Material disagreements appear across the index. These are reported rather than resolved.

  • MailerLite's free limits. One platform reported 1,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails/month [146]; the majority reported 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails/month [139].
  • Mailchimp's free limits. One platform reported 500 contacts and 1,000 emails/month [42]; the majority reported 250 contacts and 500 sends/month [80].
  • HubSpot's free contact cap. One platform reported 2,000 contacts [118]; others reported 1,000 marketing contacts for post-September-2024 accounts [226].
  • Kit's free subscriber cap. One platform reported 1,000 subscribers [46]; the majority reported 10,000 [29].

How to compare your options

Questions explored

  • What should a buyer check before choosing a free email marketing platform for a startup?
  • Which free email marketing platform has the lowest published upgrade cost for a startup that outgrows the free tier?

Work through the following decision sequence, using the ranking table as the shortlist and the entity evidence as the detail.

  1. Calculate your actual send pattern first. Multiply your list size by your planned sends per month. A 1,000-contact list emailed four times per month needs 4,000 sends. That figure immediately rules out Mailchimp (500 sends/month) and HubSpot (2,000 sends/month) and fits Loops (4,000 combined sends per rolling 30 days) exactly at its ceiling.
  2. Decide whether you need same-day full-list sends. If yes, Brevo's 300-email daily cap is disqualifying for a 1,000-contact launch [184]. Sender, Kit, Systeme.io, and EmailOctopus do not impose a daily cap on their free plans.
  3. Decide whether you need automated sequences on the free tier. If yes, Kit, HubSpot, and Mailchimp are poor fits because their free plans exclude or heavily restrict automation [29]. Sender, EmailOctopus, Brevo, and Systeme.io include some automation, though the depth conflicts across sources.

Methodology

This index was produced from a single standardized research prompt sent once to each of seven included AI platforms on 2026-10-01. The prompt described a bootstrapped startup founder with a small contact list and no marketing budget who needs to send email newsletters and basic automated sequences for free, and asked which providers the platform would recommend and why.

The seven included platforms were ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Kimi, and Gemini. Each platform's response was parsed into entity mentions, fit assessments, use-case findings, pricing and terms, strengths, limitations, disagreements, and verification questions. Entity names were normalized to a canonical brand before qualification.

An entity qualified for the final ranking only if it was named by at least two platforms during ranking discovery. Eighteen unique entities were named; ten qualified. The final ranking order is based on platform mentions, then average listed position, then best listed position. That order is reproduced without recalculation.

Platform mentions count only ranking-discovery mentions. They do not count platforms that later completed a fit assessment. All seven included platforms evaluated fit for the entities they named, but that is a separate measure.

Citations in this article are platform-reported evidence, not independently verified facts. Company-owned sources are distinguished from independent sources where the evidence bundles provided that information.

Research limitations

  • Single prompt, single run. This study used one standardized prompt sent once to each included platform. Different wording, a different run, or a follow-up question could produce different recommendations.
  • AI answers vary. Platform answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved.
  • Platform-reported research dates differ from the authoritative run date. The run research date is 2026-10-01. Platform-reported dates in the evidence bundles include 2026-01-15 (Claude, DeepSeek), 2026-06-11 (DeepSeek), 2026-06-12 (DeepSeek), 2026-06-13 (DeepSeek), and 2026-02-06 (DeepSeek). These are provenance metadata and do not independently prove freshness.
  • One platform ran without search. Deepseek's research capability record shows search disabled. Its claims require explicit verification before being described as current facts.
  • URLs were not independently validated. The supplied URLs were collected from platform responses and were not independently validated by the writer stage.
  • Company-owned citations materially outnumber independent citations for several entities. For Sender, MailerLite, Zoho Campaigns, EmailOctopus, HubSpot, and Loops, company-owned citations outnumber independent ones. Company claims are not described here as independently verified.
  • Identity audit notes. For Brevo, one or more fetched domains were not corroborated by brand-name or site-identity metadata, and only the official brevo.com property should be treated as the identity source.

The consensus assessment

Brevo is the consensus leader of this 7-platform index for free email marketing for startups, named by all seven platforms studied. Its free plan offers contact storage far beyond the target buyer's need and a clear volume-based upgrade path, but its 300-email daily cap, mandatory branding, and mixed independent deliverability evidence make it a poor fit for same-day full-list launches or brand-sensitive sending.

Sender is the strongest alternative for founders who need a large monthly send allowance without a daily cap, with 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month on its Free Forever plan. EmailOctopus and Systeme.io serve buyers who want basic automation or an all-in-one funnel stack on the free tier. Zoho Campaigns offers the cheapest reported paid upgrade step. Kit offers the highest free subscriber ceiling but excludes automated sequences. MailerLite and Mailchimp now cap their free plans at 250 contacts, which is below the stated buyer requirement. HubSpot suits founders who want email plus a free CRM but not those who need free workflow automation or custom sending-domain authentication. Loops is the narrowest fit, positioned specifically for SaaS product email with a 1,000-contact ceiling and a $49/month first paid step.

No single platform in this index is best for every version of the buyer need.

  • Source URLs came from AI platform responses and were not independently validated during report preparation.
